Ski Trip Update

Our first ski trip of the year was a success.  The students enjoyed their time learning and skiing on the slopes.  In monitoring the upcoming weather for next week and ensuring the students continue to enjoy their experience, we have rescheduled the second ski date to Tuesday, February 5th.  The time of departure and return remains the same.

Healthy Schools Update

Students participated in a wonderful Healthy Lunch Challenge.  Healthy Schools Class Ambassadors tallied the number of participants each day and after reviewing all of the results, I’m happy to report that Mrs. Babic’s Grade 3 class wins an extra gym class this week.  Lou, feel free to find a time on the Phys. Ed. schedule when the gym is free and take your class in to enjoy some extra physical education time! Congratulations.

This week, we will have an opportunity to sample another healthy snack courtesy of the Healthy Schools Committee.  Mangos are the fruit of choice.

10 Amazing Facts about Mangos

  1. More fresh mangoes are eaten around the world every day than any other fruit.
  2. They were first grown in India over 5,000 years ago. In fact, the paisley pattern which was first developed there, is based on the shape of a mango.
  3. It is believed that Buddha meditated under the cool shade of a mango tree.
  4. Mango comes in many different shapes, sizes and colors including yellow, orange, red and green.
  5. The vitamin content of mango depends on the variety and maturity of the fruit. When a mango is green and still growing there is a high vitamin C content, as the fruit ripens and matures the amount of vitamin A increases.
  6. Giving someone a basket of mangoes is considered a gesture of friendship.
  7. The mango tree plays a sacred role in India; it’s a symbol of love and some believe that they can even grant wishes.
  8. The oldest living mango tree is 300 years old and is found in East Khandesh. Surprisingly, this tree still produces viable fruit!
  9. Mangos are related to cashews and pistachios. Can you see the resemblance?
  10. Mango leaves are often used at weddings to ensure the couple bear plenty of children.

Thank you to Mrs. Giovanna Blair, chair of our Healthy Schools Committee for delivering the mangoes to OLA for all to enjoy.  Healthy School Ambassadors will deliver mangoes to students when they are ripe enough to eat throughout this coming week.

Winter Weather Update

All students should have a dress code sweater at school during the winter months.  The standard temperature setting as per Board policy is 20 degrees in the school throughout the day.  The extreme cold temperatures that are expected throughout the next week may require an extra layer of clothing to help keep you warm. Students should have an extra change of clothes including socks in the event that they get wet while playing in the snow at recess.

Making Kindness the Norm

In an effort to support the work we are doing here at school, I was directed to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website.  We know that kindness is learned through experience and through modelling. What are you doing at home and in the community to teach kindness to your families?  How are you experiencing kindness in the community? Here is a link to a calendar for 2019 with RAKs (random acts of kindness) for you and your kids – maybe some fun ideas for you or an opportunity to make your own.  Have fun!
