Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: in many cultures, this means no meat, dairy products, or eggs.
On Tuesday morning, pancakes will be served to students and staff. Classes will come into the gym, sit at tables, and enjoy two tasty pancakes cooked by Catholic School Council parent volunteers and staff. Aunt Jemima Pancake mix and President’s Choice Syrup will be used. If your child is unable to eat the pancakes or the syrup, please write a note to his/her classroom teacher. Parents are welcome to send in an alternate food if you so wish.
