A Message from the Healthy Schools Committee

The Healthy Schools Committee will be introducing a new initiative this month called the Healthy Snack.  The goal of this initiative is to introduce children to fruit or vegetable snacks that they might not be familiar with.  The food will be chosen by our Healthy Schools student class ambassadors and the Healthy Schools Committee.

On February 6th, 2018 your child(ren) will have the opportunity to sample grapefruit.

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its sour to semi-sour fruit.  It is available year round but their peak season is January-April.  Cut the fruit out of the segments and eat as is like an orange, use them in salads or drink the juice.  Some health benefits of grapefruit are:

Contains high levels of Vitamin C, antioxidants, folic acid and potassium

Contains a lot of water and is therefor hydrating

High in fiber and low in calories

Promotes healthy sleep

Boosts the immune system

Can lower blood pressure

Prevents acid formation in the body

The Healthy Snacks Program is supported by the Healthy Schools Grant we received from the York Region Public Health Department.  Thank you to Madame Turchiaro (Teacher Facilitator) and Mrs. Giovanna Blair (Chair of the Committee) for their dedicated efforts to help make OLA a little more healthy! A very special thank you to Oak Ridges Food Market for helping to subsidize the cost of the grapefruits.  Please support Oak Ridges to thank them for their contributions to the OLA school community.
