The Holy Season of Lent

On Wednesday at 9:30am, we will begin the Lenten season with a Liturgy of the Word prepared by Mrs. Mastrogiacomo’s and Mrs. Babic’s Grade 3 classes.  At the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, all students and staff will receive ashes.  Parents are welcome to attend.  The forty day period of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday, is typically marked by fasting, prayer and performing good deeds and charitable acts. During Religious Education classes, teachers will be discussing ways that students can prepare for the Easter season.  Fasting, or giving something up for Lent is a great way to practice self-discipline, a quality that serves us well in our lives. Fasting during Lent is a very personal sacrifice, and the reward you reap from following through on your fast is a simple self-acknowledgement that you can achieve the goals you set for yourself, despite various temptations to go astray. Self-restraint and sacrifice throughout Lent helps us appreciate those things that we may take for granted, and teaches us to reflect on the more important aspects of our lives. During Lent, we also perform many good deeds and charitable acts. Doing things for the good of others, and serving others selflessly, is central to our Catholic faith. I would like to thank you in advance for your support as we participate in a Lenten food drive and the annual ShareLife Easter Flower Sale.  Not only are you helping others in our community and around the world, but you’re also setting a great example for students on how to practice our faith during the Lenten season.
